Search Tips

  • Advanced search finds all directory entries that match all the values that you enter in the form.
Example: Entering Kelley for Last Name and College for School/Division looks for anyone whose last name contains Kelley and whose School/Division contains College.
  • Upper and lower case are treated the same.
Example: The values kelley, Kelley, kelleY, KELLEY all get the same result.
  • Asterisks (*) in search values match zero or more characters.
Example: The value By* for Last Name will match any last name that begins with By, such as Byam, Byers, or Byron.
  • If a search value contains one or more asterisks, then the value is used as given.
Example: The value “* IT” (without the quotes) in School/Division matches any entry whose School/Division ends with “IT” separated from the previous word by a space, such as "Research & Health Sciences IT".
  • If a search value begins with an equal (=), then the initial equal is removed and the value is used as given. This is needed when the value has no asterisks.
Example: Entering “=schmidt” (without the quotes) in the Last Name field matches all entries with last name equal to schmidt.
  • If the search value begins with tilde (~), then an approximate match is done using the first word following the tilde. Asterisks are ignored.
Example: “~*kobe*bryant*” (without the quotes) for the Full Name is treated the same as ~kobe, and results in an approximate match on kobe. It will match Kobe, Gabe, Cabe, Cobb, Kebbi, Gabay, Goba, Kaba, Kooby, Gabai, etc.in the first name, middle name, last name, or hyphenated part of the last name.
  • Otherwise, asterisks (*) are added so that a value matches if the field of a directory entry has words that contain the search words in the order given.
Example: Entering Lambro for Last Name and Emory College for School/Division searches for all people with last name matching *Lambro* and School/Division matching *Emory*College*. Thus the search finds anyone whose last name contains Lambro and whose School/Division has words that contain Emory and College in that order.
  • If your search does not find the person you seek, you can press the browser Back button to return to the form and edit the values.
